a.把數字讀出來或拼寫出來時，如數字在三位或三位以上，應在十位數之前加上and，如無十位數時，則在百位數與個位數之間加上and：

上述and的用法也適用於一千以上的數字，因為在英語中一萬是ten thousand，十萬是a hundred thousand：

上述方法同樣適用於一百萬以上的數字：
303，000，000 three hundred and three million
b. hundred，thousand，million等單獨使用或用於短語中，前面用a要比用one更常見：
100 a hundred
1，000 a thousand
100，000 a hundred thousand
我們也可以說a hundred and one，a hundred and two等及a hundred and ninety－nine和a thousand and one等，一直到a thousand and ninety－nine為止，或者用one而不用a（參見上面），因此：

但是：1，140 one thousand，one hundred and forty
c. hundred，thousand，million和dozen這些詞用來指具體明確的數目時，不用複數形式：

假如這些詞用來指大致的計數，即只給人一個大致的概念時，必須用複數形式：

注意：在這種情況下，要在數詞hundreds，thousands等之後加上介詞of。
of不能用在明確的數字之後，但在the／them／these／those之前或所有格之前則例外：

d. 由四個或四個以上的數碼構成的數目，如上所示，是分成三位一組讀寫的，小數點（.）讀為「point」：

基數詞在表示確切的數字時，不能使用百、千、百萬、十億的複數形式；但是，當基數詞表示不確切數字，如成百、成千上萬，三三兩兩時，基數詞則以複數形式出現。
